Chemical Ingredients in Shampoo

I am using the shampoo from Nuskin for normal to oily hairs. I always have no idea about the mentioned chemical ingredients stated for the shampoo. Now I try to break it down :

TEA lauryl sulfate : a popular emulsifying ingredient in moisturizers and shampoos; also a detergent that can be drying to skin and hair.

Ammonium Laureth Sulfate: The primary active agent in shampoos that acts as a surfactant; an agent that allows oil to mix with water.

Cocamide MEA : foaming agent and surfactants in shampoo

Cocobetaine : a surfactant. It can be found in bath and body care products

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract : medicinally for thousands of years for effective healing and soothing

Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract : possesses powerful healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract : possess gentle, healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract- Has antiseptic, cleansing, balancing, calming, healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract : stimulates the circulation and the metabolism. It is also used to treat poorly healing wounds and eczema.

VITIS VINIFERA -Common European grape cultivated in many varieties; chief source of Old World wine and table grapes. Possesses anti-flammatory, antioxidant and water retention properties

Panthenol : non-irriating form of Vitamin B. When this natural, hydrating vitamin is applied externally, it penetrates into lower skin layers, gets absorbed into your skin cells and turns into pantothenic acid (commonly known as Vitamin B5). Because panthenol is absorbed deeply into the skin, it adds essential moisture and has a desirable plumping effect.

Sodium PCA : hygroscopic, attracting moisture from the air. It is used as a moisturizer for hair and skin care products

Polyquaternium : Bring excellent wet combability to hair in Shampoo and Hair Care Systems. Improve appearance and feel of damaged hair ·Provide controlled conditioning ·Will not irritate the eyes ·Reduce eye irritation of surfactants

Glycerin : a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to your skin

Structured wheat hydrocolloid complex : strengthen and nourish your hair for protection from the stresses of styling and environmental exposure

Hydrolyzed Rice Protein : Hair conditioning agent

My Daily Hair Treatment to Prevent Hair Loss

I really want to prevent hair loss from happening on me. If not, I want to delay the process as much as possible. Also, I need to keep my hairs dry and clean feeling daily, also my scalp not itchy, oily , pores feeling blocked , or the scalp feeling tight & stretched, as these symptoms will definitely affect my concentration on may daily activities.

I use to wash my hairs twice a day - one before sleep and the other after wake-up. I use the shampoo from a well-known MLM corporation, which I have used for over 5 years. The shampoo is for normal to oily type. I use the shampoo twice during each wash - this gives me the feeling that my hairs after washing are cleaner. I will work the shampoo into lather, and scratch my scalp thoroughly. Also I tend to use warm to hot water to rinse my hairs. This is especially the case when I find my scalp quite oily or the scalp feeling stretched, and this feeling remains unchanged after washing with shampoo.

I rarely use conditioner afterwards, except when my hairs are relatively long and the hairs are stuck together, and I have difficulty in combing / managing hairs. Then I tend to get a dry & clean cloth to dry up my hairs.

Sometimes, before drying my hairs, I tend to fill the basin full with hot water, and then put my head into the basin to get my hairs wet. I will then use my hands to do some scratching on my scalp to do the final cleaning.

I myself will not blow the hairs dry except in the hair salon. Just leave it dry naturally. I seldom use gel to shape up my hair style because once I apply it, I will feel that my scalp starts to get oily very quickly, or the pores are blocked so I feel not comfortable. I am jealous of those who can apply gel to fix the hair styles they want, but no way, this is my destiny.

Another reason I do the showering in the morning is that it helps to energize me and gives me a refreshing feeling to prepare for a good start. I am not sure if whether the way I am doing is effective or stupid but anyway, this is the best approach I find which is good for the health of my hairs.

Other Hair Loss Treatment I tried

Hair Growth Nutrients from MLM corporation

I had the experience of buying and using the hair supplement / nutrients from a well-known MLM corporation ( famous in skin care products ). These were tiny bottles of nutrients / liquids that users can use cotton stick to soak and put the nutrients all over the scalp for absorbion ( after cleaning up the hairs ). These liquids are claimed to have many essential nutrients that are fundamental for the good health of the hairs. And I was told by one of my friends who was a distributor there that a doctor, who had limited hairs, started to use this nutrients for hair growth after reading and knowing the chemical elements of these hair growth nutrients, and the result was positive.

My experience was not that good. After putting the liquid over the scalp, my hairs and scalp was quite sticky. Since I have to leave it for some hours for my scalp to absorb the nutrients, I used to try this before sleep, and then wash my hairs after wake-up. After trying these nutrients for several times, I felt my scalp quite itchy. Also, instead of hoping for hair growth / stronger hairs, I found more hair loss during washing, and so I stopped using it. These nutrient was quite expensive to some extent, and I left several boxes of these hair growth nutrients unused and threw away eventually.

Pills that prevent hair loss

I took Propecia from MSD for quite a number of years, dated back to year 2000 / 2001 when it was rolled out to Hong Kong market. At the very beginning, I needed to go to the clinic and got the consultation from the doctor before I could purchase the pills. Then, I found that these were available in the general pharmaceutical store, and I started to purchase from there. I never knew if the pills from these general pharmaceutical store are real or not. I tried to get these pills from stores like Manning's and Watson, and they needed to provide the medical recommendation document from the doctor in order to get the purchase.

My intake of Propecia was not that continuous : I took the pills when I found that more hairs losing recently, and then I may stop when I found the problem seemed disappear. There was no apparent side effect to me, even though it was known that some patients will get impotent after the intake of these pills. Once I met a new friend in a dinner gathering, who worked in USA for MSD as medical representative specific for Propecia ( the exact position I forgot ). He told me that these pills will definitely affect the male's hormone level, so he told me that if anyone who wanted to have baby, he needed to stop using the pills for at least 1 year, otherwise there was chance that the new born baby would be some sort abnormal.

Recently, I stop using the pills totally. The reason is that compared with the hair quantity I have when I start to take the pills, I find less hairs on my head in fact. I never know if I buy the dummy pills or in fact my hair problem is not related to the hormonal issue that the pills can heal and control.

Hair treatment I experienced

Finally I consulted the medical centre that claim to be specialised in resolving the hair problems and re-growing you hairs. It really worked to relieve my poor hair scalp conditions. Less dandruff, less oily scalp and less hairs losing by using the wide range of shampoo products and medication offered. The hair consultant there used the video magnifying instrument to walk through my scalp and claimed that my pores were blocked with oil, making the hairs grow in a poor environment and the hairs got thinner. I got the treatment for over a year's time.

I would say, the treatment was good, but it was quite an expensive treatment. The was especially for a student like me at that time with no solid income. I needed to apply for a credit card at that time solely for the purpose of paying the medical expense for the hair treatment.

The other thing was that it would be quite a time consuming process, as I went to the medical centre once to twice a week to get the consultation from the consultant there, and then I needed to stay there to receive the medical treatment recommended by the consultant. The staff there will put the prescribed chemicals / medication all over my scalp, and then they will massage my head to facilitate the absorption of the medication by skin. ( The medication was for either removing the dirts and dandruff clocked over my scalp and pores, and / or nutrients that can boost the healthy growth of my hairs from a thin condition to become stronger and thicker, as far as I can remember )

After that, they will put a steaming machine over my head ( just like the one we found in ordinary hair dresser ), and this steaming process will last for 10 - 15 minutes. The process completed and then I will try to manipulate my hairs before leaving. But you may realise, my hairs and scalp were covered by chemicals , so the hairs were hard to manage, smelly and also quite greasy. Also I can not wash my hairs right away. I have to leave the hairs / scalp to absorb these medication so it generally took 6 - 8 hrs before I could go to clean up my hairs using the shampoo products offered by the medical centre.

The entire treatment process took about 45 - 60 minutes on average at the medical centre. If I were there at the peak hours , such as the after office hours, the medical centre will be crowed with patients, and so the time of waiting for the consultation and treatment can be quite significant. I would say at that time I was a student, I had the luxury to have ample time to wait and attend all the recommended treatment at the medical centre. Also I could go there at the non-peak hour to eliminate the waiting time, but for those who are working, I could hardly image if they could arrange such ample time to receive the treatment consistently in order to get the result.

Also, the medical centre provided quite a number of shampoo products for me to use : one for softening and removing the dirt and dandruff stuck on the scalp or pores, one shampoo that fit my hair type, one was the hair conditioner. The other 2 were the tonic - one for daytime and the other one for night time - I needed to use cotton sticks to put these liquids all over my head as recommended. So, as you can imagine, this was another quite time consuming process.

After over a year's treatment, and as I found my hairs condition improved ( of course not perfect, but least I will find not find my dandruff keep falling like snow when I scratch my head, some hairs fall together the dandruff ), I started to wonder if I should stop for a while in terms of the time spent and the money involved. The hair consultant there kept recommending me some new programs for me after the original treatment program finished. After all, I determined to stop. In fact, I did not finish the whole program of the last hair treatment exercise I bought from the medical centre.

After several years, I was graduated and was working, I found my hairs problem re-appeared again. I went to this medical centre again to receive the treatment. However, as far as I could remember, I only took one recommended program ( about 30 treatment per program ), but I did not finish it.

Hair problems - my bad days

My hair type should be normal to oily type. I never spend time on taking care of hairs until I went to university. I started to use gel for fixing my hairs, blowing the hairs dry after wash. Some time later, I started to find myself having a lot of dandruff. No matter how many times I washed my hairs, dandruff still existed. It seemed to become a fix layer on my scalp. When I scratched my scalp, dandruff fell like snow. The worse was that hairs also started to fall as well. The scenery was quite frightening for a young guy at that time.

Also, I started to find that my hairs and scalp turned oily. I always felt that all the pores on my head were blocked with oils, so making me feeling very uncomfortable and could not concentrate on my daily activities. As I found the pores blocked with oil, I always felt my scalp very hot. This is especially the case when I went shopping and the spotlight in the boutique hit my hairs.

I started to wash my hairs daily.Twice a day or 3 times per day. I switched to using the baby shampoo because of its mild nature. Stopped using the hair conditioner. Hair washing became a very painful activity for me at that time as I found lots of my hairs falling, but my scalp was too oily and my hairs quite greasy, I needed to wash and clean it. However, after washing, my scalp turned oily quite soon and my feeling " the pores / scalp " were blocked re-appeared very soon.

I also started to switch to nutrition supplement by choosing pills like vitamin B complex & zinc, as I read from books that these vitamin may help the healthy growth of the hairs. Of course, the result was not none or not apparent.

The hair problem kept annoying me for over 1 year and the situation remained unchanged. Once I went to a hair dresser shop, the hair dresser asked me to take good care of my hairs. Otherwise, I will be bald some time later. Quite frightening message and I knew that this situation will appear if I can not fix the problem.

As said before, as I always felt my pores on my head / scalp were blocked with oily and feeling greasy all the time, I lost concentration on many of my daily activities, kept worrying about the problem, more inward and less networking in the social life. I did not know who I should consult as the ordinary doctor would quote reasons like " I was male"," male hormones", " stress". They were not strong in healing the problems in hairs. I looked like a freak and was helpless in front of the doctors. I never mentioned the problem to my family or friends as I believed that they think hair losing was natural and was common for men. Also most of my friends at that time looked healthy in hairs, so they could not share the feeling and experience I had at that moment.
